The Portrait of Henry James in Estonia(n)
View through CrossRef
Henry James is virtually invisible in Estonia(n), as is Estonia itself in the world. His earliest works in the library of the University of Tartu (1632) are German translations. In old catalogues, James figures as a British author, American literature being relatively unknown in Estonia before World War II. After the forceful incorporation of Estonia into the Soviet Union, literature could be studied predominantly from the Marxist-Leninist angle, as the textbooks and BA theses testify. Daami portree (1977, The Portrait of a Lady) was widely read, the first piece in the portrait of Henry James in Estonia(n).
