The Puerto Rican Diaspora to the United States
View through CrossRef
This chapter explores the history, demography, and
economy in connection with the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States. It elaborates on the
shifting settlement patterns of Puerto Rican migrants for the last sixty years. After World War
II, the government’s industrialization program, Operation Bootstrap, displaced thousands of
rural workers to urban areas. The chapter then discusses the notion of Nuyoricans, return
migrants and their children, who often face the stereotype that they are less Puerto Rican than
those who remained on the Island. It also considers why Puerto Ricans remain one of the most
disadvantaged ethnic minorities in the United States.
