Writing Inca History

This chapter provides an overview of documentary sources for the study of the Inca, with special attention to the processes of the construction of histories in viceregal Peru. From the earliest chronicles written by Spaniards associated with the Conquest to late colonial encyclopedic works, this chapter addresses both published and unpublished sources, including chronicles (relaciones), religious sources, and administrative reports (visitas). Viewed through time and by genre, the chapter discusses the first eyewitness accounts of the Inca Empire, the rise of “official” Inca histories during the Toledan Reforms, manuals for the extirpation of idolatry, and illustrated accounts by native writers.
