Kaposi's sarcoma: A manifestation of AIDS in otorhinolaryngology

View through CrossRef
Kaposi's sarcoma is a multifocal, angioproliferative tumor that can be localized in cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral tissues. Human herpesvirus 8 is an important oncogenic factor. The oral presentation of Kaposi's sarcoma is of diagnostic importance, since it may be the initial manifestation of generalized Kaposi's sarcoma or a sign of HIV and AIDS. The authors present the case of a 26-year-old patient diagnosed with AIDS who has a urinary tract infection associated with odynophagia with about 3 months of evolution. The objective examination revealed a swollen uvula of violet color with yellow exudate. Due to lack of response to medical treatment (amoxicillin / clavulanic acid and fluconazole), a biopsy of the lesion revealed a Kaposi Sarcoma compatible morphologic picture. The patient was referred to the Oncology Group consultation and started palliative chemotherapy. At present, it presents with multiple cutaneous lesions at the cervical and face level compatible with Kaposi's Sarcoma and maintains oral lesion, despite the established therapy.
