Energy Seduced in Light

View through National Gallery of Denmark
Heggenhougen-Jensen was among the painters who reinvented painting after the period dominated by linguistically oriented conceptual art. Here, the painting’s dynamics is generated by figurative signs interpreted by means of a simple, clear palette: blue, black, white, red, and yellow. To the left a TV screen on two wheels has fallen over. An empty frame shoots out to one side on two wheels, its speed accentuated by dynamic brushstrokes. The two figures are down-to-earth, mundane everyday objects. But they are also personified and gendered. By virtue of their positions – overturned or rolling, static or dynamic – they also appear as signs of yearning and desire. The signs create meanings in their own fictive reality or hyper-reality. At the same time they point in humorous and ironic ways into the artificial image generated reality from which they spring.
