Synthetic and Recombinant Hemoglobins

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter on synthetic and recombinant hemoglobins discusses hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier blood substitutes that one may encounter during the practice of anesthesiology. It will also discuss the impact these substiutions have on the longevity of storage and potential impact the use of these symthetic and recombinant hemoblobins may have on patient care. Recombinant hemoglobin and synthetic blood are extremely important in light of blood shortages, possible contaminants, limited donor blood shelf life, donor blood storage issues, and ethical issues involving blood donation. This chapter addresses specific advantages, disadvantages, costs, and other aspects of these artificial hemoglobins to our healthcare systems.
