America’s Brooklands

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway—modeled on England’s Brooklands automotive track—opened in 1909 with contests featuring balloons, motorcycles, automobiles, and aviation; later that year it was paved with 3.2 million bricks. This chapter shows that this innovative speedway was a place for entertainment and rational recreation, but it was also a place for demonstrating the annihilation of space. Around this time, a color line formed in motor racing, especially when famous Black boxer Jack Johnson was barred from the speedway and other drivers, including Louis Chevrolet, embraced what labor historians term the wages of whiteness.
