Evidence of hops imported from Continental Europe for brewing in England at least 100 years before hop growing introduced in Kent by Huguenot refugees from the Low Countries. Disputes about flavouring ale with hops. Evidence from 16th century books, notably Scot A Perfecte Platorme of a Hoppe Garden, about the design and building of the first oasts. Surviving examples at Golford near Cranbrook, Kent match the books well. Plans of these oasts as they were in 1960. Rapid expansion of beer drinking drove need for new oasts. The differences between hop oasts and malt kilns.
