Von KV 55 zum Tell Halaf

Before the splendor of the treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun also radiated into the work of Harry Burton and he was proclaimed the “dean of archaeological photographers,” there was a professional photographer in Cairo who was at least Burton’s equal—the German photographer Robert Paul. His excellent photographs that he took for Theodore M. Davis in 1907 of the “Amarna Cache,” the alleged tomb of Teje (KV 55), are of inestimable value for understanding this much debated tomb today. But his name always remained unmentioned, although a year later Paul was also responsible for the photographs in the tomb of Haremhab (KV 57). These were soon at the center of a small affair that threatened to strain the relationship between German and British archaeologists.
