BART Stray Current Mitigation

The control of stray earth current associated with dc transit system operation has a long history (1) and during the design and start up of the BART system the problem of stray current was recognized. Some features of the BART system design such as grade separated right of way, regenerative braking and well-insulated rail mounting developed at BART, help to minimize stray current effects while other features such as relatively long traction power substation spacing and high system voltage make stray current control difficult. This is a description of our progress in the development of system grounding which will minimize stray current.
