CUMHURİYETİN 100. YILINDA DÜNYA DİLİ TÜRKÇE

Turkish, one of the oldest spoken and written languages in the world, is
making steady progress towards becoming a global language. In particular, over the last 30
years, with the collapse of the USSR, the five Turkic republics established as a result, and
the Turkish-descended communities living within the Russian Federation's borders, Turkish
has become an increasingly powerful potential force through education and languagebased
projects. In this context, the "Great Student Project," initiated in 1992, has played a
crucial role in connecting us with regions that share the same cultural roots. This project
spans from the Balkans to Turkestan, Siberia, the Caucasus, the Idil-Ural, and the
Turkmeneli regions. Through the different dialects of the oldest forms of Turkish used in
these geographical areas, Turkish has grown into a significant force on a global scale.
Today, when we consider that approximately 230 million people speak various dialects of
Turkish as their mother tongue, we can clearly see the immense global influence of Turkish.
The process of teaching one’s own language as a foreign language, which is also referred to
as a "smokeless industry," will gain even more importance in the coming years. It will turn
into a major competitive field, as it brings significant added value to the economies of
developed countries.
Of course, we do not evaluate this process solely in terms of economic input. In
recent years, concepts like cultural transmission, cultural interaction, intercultural
communication, and intercultural communicative competence have gained prominence. It is
certain that in the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language, cultural transmission plays a
key role. In this sense, one of the most important aspects in teaching Turkish to Turkish
children abroad, teaching Turkish to Turkish-descended communities, and in the foreign
language teaching of Turkish, is cultural transmission.
