His Serene Highness Prince Alexander Sergeyevich Menshikov – the greatgrandson of Peter’s favourite, adjutant general of two emperors, bright diplomat, admiral and naval minister, governor-general of Finland, incompetent commander-in-chief at the main theatre of the Crimean War – had the right to wear 11 uniforms. The author of this article tried to analyse the activities of A. S. Menshikov in all these hypostases on the basis of historiography and memoir literature. The fi rst part of the article examines the qualities of A. S. Menshikov as an aristocrat, diplomat and adjutant general. The article by A. V. Butenin [1] is devoted to this problem. This publication complements it and offers a different view on some issues.
