Its ecology, pollination, dioecy and conservation are discussed; a detailed description is given. The species is now apparently restricted to the Haha‐jima island group, where the largest number of populations exist on Haji‐jima itself. Threats to its conservation are from two invasive trees, Ficus microcarpa and Psidium littorale.
