After he is fired by Count Basie, Byas forms a group that includes pianist Erroll Garner and bassist Slam Stewart. He also plays with Coleman Hawkins and Oran “Hot Lips” Page, and makes his first record under his own name, and not as a sideman. He is part of early “pre-bop” bebop sessions with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Oscar Pettiford.
