Systematics of sea snakes: a critical review
View through CrossRef
Abstract
The taxonomy of elapid sea snakes is reviewed. There is no general agreement on generic and suprageneric relationships. The problematic genera are reviewed on the basis of published data and personal observations. Sea snakes form a group of aquatic snakes with a vertically flat paddle-like tail, which is not found in any other terrestrial or aquatic snakes. Sea snakes belong to the same group as terrestrial elapids; they are all characterized by the anterior position of the poison-fangs on the maxillary bone (proteroglyphous) (McCarthy 1985).
