Abstract
At a fateful moment of his final pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Jesus was arrested. The Gospels claim the chief priests and allied scribes sent followers to arrest Jesus. The Gospels are at odds in various ways, and the nature of the arresting party is a case in point. At one extreme, Mark and Matthew portray an arrest party the chief priests organized, consisting largely of their clients and enslaved. At the other, John apparently places a military tribune and soldiers from a Roman cohort at Jesus’ arrest site. What explains these discrepancies? Are the Gospels accurate in their portrayal at all? Who arrested Jesus?
