From Rebels to Emperors to Jedi Spirits

View through CrossRef
This essay traces the similarities and differences between the historical, biographical, and psychological trajectories of Walt Disney and George Lucas. Disney and Lucas, in dramatically different American eras, transformed from young filmmakers hungry for experimentation and positioned as Hollywood rebels, to moguls overseeing their respective self-named corporate empires, and then finally to ghosts-in-the-shell-of-corporations. The chapter explores the influence of Walt Disney on George Lucas, who modeled himself, to some extent, on Disney. It examines how the Lucas-Disney relationship evolved over time and resulted in various partnerships involving Disney theme parks during the late 20th century. Lastly, it considers the quasi-religious nature of fan response to the Disney and Lucas mythic, corporate-fashioned identities, a note-worthy transmutation of the human and secular, via hagiography and hero-worship, into the commodified spiritual and iconic.
