Jerome Kern

Abstract Jerome Kern was a prolific and visionary writer of popular song. The first of a series of great Broadway composers including Berlin, Gershwin, Rodgers, Porter, and Arlen, Kern exerted a profound influence on the future of American popular song. Breaking free from his European influences, Kern found a voice that would be distinctly American, and in so doing transformed musical theater. His early songs are briefly discussed but are found to give little indication of Kern’s mature style. “They Didn’t Believe Me” is cited as being a significant departure from anything Kern had written up to that point. Over the next several decades, until his sudden death from a heart attack in 1945, Kern produced dozens of excellent songs, many of which have become standards.
