Temple relief with depiction of the falcon-headed Aton and King Amenophis IV.
View through Europeana Collections
The relief block from Karnak dates back to the first two years of Amenophis' IV. It is one of the few examples that still show Pharaoh in the traditional way of depicting Thebes. The relief is divided into two fields separated by a vertical inscription line. On the left is depicted a wrinkle-headed sun god and on the right Amenophis IV with the Blue Crown. The iconography in the depiction corresponds to the style of Amenophis III. The face of Amenophis IV./ Akhenaten resembles his father. The inscriptions, on the other hand, are already tending towards the new religious ideas, and the sun’s disk above the head of Amenophis' IV. With the signs of life at the bottom are pretensions of a motif, which is one of the most famous in the Amarna period: the god Aton represented by a sun disk whose rays run out of hands and hold signs of life.
