Forming a Priestly People for a Eucharistic Revival

View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT: This article argues that any effective Eucharistic revival among the laity must necessarily involve a revitalization of the baptismal priesthood, since active participation in the liturgy is only made possible through a sharing in Christ’s priesthood bestowed in baptism. The essay first explores the biblical foundations of the common priesthood of the faithful. It then considers the role of the laity in offering the Eucharist which is grounded in the identity received through the sacramental character given at baptism. It then argues that inattention to the priestly quality of the People of God risks leading to a reductive functionalism unsuited to a lasting Eucharistic revival. The essay concludes with some modest proposals for forming the laity more deeply to live the baptismal priesthood.
