Medieval enamelled plaques of Henry of Blois
View through Europeana Collections
The engraving shows two semi-circular plaques. They are here shown joined together to make a complete circle, but were not originally so. One plaque shows Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester holding an object thought to be an altar, the other shows two censing angels emerging from a cloud. Both have a Latin dedicatory inscription around the rim. They are of copper, enamelled in champlevé, engraved and gilded, and thought to have been made in England c1150, by a Mosan goldsmith (see Bibliography).
