Abstract
When Oldenburg died his family was left bereft, his friends grieved, and the learned world felt it as an extraordinary loss. Only his few enemies rejoiced, and like Hooke saw it as creating the possibility of a major upheaval in the Royal Society. Oldenburg’s importance to the world is best shown by the spontaneous tributes paid by various individuals, tributes contained in letters never intended to be made public.
