Greek Personal Names in Egypt

Abstract This volume contains a selection of papers written by specialists from the fields of Greek Papyrology, Egyptology, Coptology, and Ancient History. It explores current research questions and future directions in onomastic studies of Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt. The topics discussed and analysed include: (1) survey of naming practices; (2) the social significance of name choice and use; (3) the local interpretation of foreign names; (4) names and name change in a diverse religious and cultural environment; (5) bilingualism and language change; (6) names as indicators of ethnic and religious identity; (7) names as evidence for cross-cultural interchange. The chapter offer a range of different perspectives and approaches in the field.
