Ownership Patterns of the 1632 Janssonius IBP

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter analyses patterns in the distribution, dissemination, and circulation of copies of the 1632 Janssonius IBP, identifying the various groups of owners, including jurists and politicians, physicians, clerics, scholars and other professions, and religious institutions, and Janssonius’ inclusion of Mare liberum. On the basis of the analysis of surviving copies, it examines readers’ engagement with the fourth, pirated edition of IBP, including recurring patterns in annotations left behind over four centuries; professional and ownership patterns from 1632 until today; what books were read with IBP; and how readers improved their understanding of the text through internal and external references, corrections, restructuring, search techniques, memory aids, teaching notes, and other devices.
