Immaterial Labor

View through CrossRef
Abstract Immaterial labor is labor that is done mainly with skills related to the mind, emotions, and sentiments, and thus with things that are intangible. Immaterial labor is analyzed by contrasting it with two other pairs of distinctive qualifications of labor: manual and nonmanual; simple and complex. Care and domestic work is introduced as a huge depository of immaterial labor. Contrary to Marx's evaluation, it is shown how postindustrial capitalism has expanded immaterial production considerably, provoking what is called the “dematerialization of reality.”
