Prevalence of Varicose Veins Among Teachers in Lahore, Pakistan

Background: Varicose veins is a type of chronic venous disease which may affects the lower limbs. It is the dilation of the subcutaneous veins, three to four millimeter in diameter. Lower limb varicose veins are common and known to have higher prevalence among people who work in occupation requiring long standing.
Objective: To observe the prevalence of varicose veins among teachers in Lahore Pakistan.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Lahore on 111 individuals, both males and females of ages between 35 to 55 years. Individuals with any history of acute DVT, acute venous disease etc. were excluded from the study. For the collection of the data, a Venus-Sym Questionnaire was used. An informed consent was taken from the study participants. SPSS 21 was used for data analysis.
Results: 37.8% prevalence of varicose veins was found out in teachers in which females were found more prevalent. Long standings and insufficient sittings gaps could be the reason for varicose veins among teachers.
Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of varicose veins or venous deficit. School teachers stand for numerous hours in classes and, it makes them prone to developing varicose veins. Because of hormonal changes during menstrual cycles, female educators have a high risk of being affected by varicose veins than males.
