Turkish Maarif Encyclopedia, published by Turkish Maarif Foundation and Turkish Academy of Sciences, has been prepared with the aim of presenting the historical knowledge of the Turks, particularly in education and related foundational fields in a structured and comprehensive form. The history of the Turks in this context spans three millennia, with their geographical presence stretching from the easternmost and southernmost regions of Asia to the heart of Europe and Africa. Over this extensive period, they have established or significantly contributed to great civilizations with their life styles which are based on different cultures, languages and religions, as well as the state and social structures they have built on these. Turks, who have largely been founders and leaders in difficult times of history, have undoubtedly based their ability to exist, live and persist on their unique educational background. Such knowledge has also affected the societies they lived with and were neighbors to in different ways. Until today, it is understood that such deep-rooted and rich educational experiences of the Turks have not been handled and fully revealed in a scientific language, style and method within a discipline and that this field has been largely neglected. Turkish Maarif Encyclopedia was prepared in six volumes consisting of approximately 1300 articles with the contribution of nearly 700 researchers and academicians from different disciplines in order to fill this gap. The work covers people, concepts, institutions, works, events, periods and cities in the fields of educational sciences, history of education, culture and civilization. The common feature of the articles from different disciplines in Turkish Maarif Encyclopedia is that they emphasize the relationship of the subject with education and the contributions of Turks to education. With its integrative approach, grounded in the unity of culture and civilization, Turkish Maarif Encyclopedia stands as a pioneering and original endeavor in Türkiye’s academic landscape
