Decomposition of Place

This chapter explores the Joycean drive to escape from bounding confines in terms of alternate tendencies to dwell in or wander from a place. On the one hand, the curse of nomadic wandering is illustrated by such figures as Cain, Ham, and the Wandering Jew. On the other hand, placelessness as spiritual liberation is illustrated by Buddha’s wanderings, Mohammed’s hejira, and the gnostic aversion to dwelling in the world. Bloom’s identification with the Wandering Jew is also supplemented by a desire to build a residence and remain in a settled place and, in the Wake, HCE as the master builder displays a similar desire for a permanent dwelling. Unsuccessful attempts to build such a dwelling, however, appear throughout Ulysses and the Wake. Cain also appears as an ambiguous figure who is both cursed with wandering and condemned as a builder of the first city or fortified place. Finally, the festival of Sukkot appears in the Wake with the promise to oxymoronically dwell in a state of impermanence.
