Abstract
The pre-history of the Hancock dynasty of artists, craftsmen, and scientists in London in the nineteenth century began in the wake of a local disaster in a small market town in Wiltshire—the Great Fire of Marlborough of 28 April 1653. It was probably this disaster that brought the family to that town to take part in its rebuilding.
