Sjösättning av båt, Kungsängen, Uppsala
View through Europeana Collections
The amateur photographer Karin Krantz (Jansson) was born in Uppsala in 1904. The family lived in a service dwelling at Ångkvarn’s yeast factory, where the father was a machinist. Karin spent her upbringing until she moved away from home and married the watchmaker Gösta Krantz in 1930. Karin and Gösta then moved to a newly built property on Väderkvarnsin.
Karin worked at the sports magazine, the sports department store of the time, which also had photographic activities with many assignments for Uppsala University. She was probably allowed to start with darkroom work but later it was the most retouching work. That’s where the photo interest was aroused. Karin started taking her own pictures that she evoked in the home where the family toilet was allowed to serve as a darkroom.
The picture collection consists of own and other people’s photographs, but is collected under the photographer name Karin Krantz. Most of the pictures were taken during the 1920s and 1930s. The pictures mainly portray relatives and friends. Karin often photographed with a self-timer which makes her self present in many of the pictures. There are several pictures of their own children as well as the nieces. One of these nieces is the artist Eric Ståhl. Many pictures are everyday depictions with family and relatives, both from the home on Mältargatan and from the summer place Lillsunda, Uppsala-Näs parish. Karin otherwise had a rich socialite that she had diligently documented.
The pictures are a gift from the genera Krantz through Karin and Göstera’s two children, Margit John and Per Krantz. Per and Margit have identified the photographs and in an interview 2001-10-23 Karin Krantz and her life.
