This chapter reviews the origins and religious beliefs of the Shakers at Pleasant Hill in Mercer County, Kentucky. It explores their ties to the slave economy. It examines the lives of Black Shakers in this religious community. And, it stresses the Shakers complicated relationship with the slave economy.
