Abstract
This poetry collection consists of one hundred pentasyllabic octets on the model of Hanshan’s Poems. Zhongfeng’s collection is a consistent warning to Chan practitioners about what is required and what must be avoided in practicing Chan (canchan 參禪). In fact, each poem begins with the phrase “practicing Chan.” The patterns are as follows: In practicing Chan, do not . . . ; In practicing Chan, such and such is proper; In practicing Chan, it is necessary to . . . ; Practicing Chan is for the sake of . . . ; In practicing Chan, there is no . . . ; Practicing Chan is not . . . ; Practicing Chan cuts off . . . ; Practicing Chan is supreme in . . .; Practicing Chan is not about . . . . Zhongfeng’s “imitations” are not rooted in the themes of Hanshan’s Poems.
