The mask is a dance mask that is part of the prop of a trancedans- set called kuda kepang (Indonesian, kuda: horse, kepang: braided bamboo). In addition to the total of 14 masks, there are also 7 braided bamboo horses, 2 costumes, 2 swords and musical instruments. (NS)
Kuda kepang is called kuda lumping on western Java, ebleg in the southwest, jatilan in Yogyakarta and reyog or ludrug on eastern Java. Holt, Claire 1967.
