Retconning Chester Brown

View through CrossRef
This chapter closely examines Brown’s tendency to continually redraw, revise, and add notes to his previous work. Using examples from throughout Brown’s career, the chapter argues that the effect of all this paratextual material is a kind of “retconning” of both his work and his authorial persona, in which earlier iterations of both are continually revised to fit his most current personal and artistic views. The chapter also discusses Brown’s use of the platform Patreon to communicate with his supporters through blog posts that discuss his many unorthodox and often controversial views.
