Creating Martial Peace: Martial Politics and Militarised ‘Peace’ Enforcement in Canada

View through CrossRef
Considers how the peacekeeping myth, and assumptions about ‘peace’ and order in Canada, has been negotiated alongside the use of militarised force against Indigenous populations. Considers how extensive reproduction of the Canadian peacekeeping myth detailed in Chapter 3 occurred alongside decades of militarised police actions against Indigenous land rights activists in Canada. Makes connections between global peacekeeping and domestic police ‘peace-keeping’, this chapter considers what is really at stake in the celebration of Canadian peacekeeping mythology: a distraction from Canada’s colonial and imperialist history through the promotion of ‘peace’ as centred on orderliness for settler populations.
