Nobelprisen i økonomi 2019 blev tildelt tre forskere i udviklingsøkonomi for deres eksperimentelle tilgang til at bekæmpe global fattigdom. Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo og Michal Kremer har transformeret udviklingsøkonomi ved at stille det vigtige, men uoverskuelige spørgsmål: »Hvordan bekæmper vi fattigdom på en effektiv måde?« og bryde det op i mindre spørgsmål med udgangspunkt i mikroøkonomisk teori og dernæst teste disse mindre spørgsmål med randomiserede eksperimenter ude i den virkelige verden.
