The ICT Sector in Mauritius’s Quest for Economic Diversification

Abstract Over the last twenty years, the local information and communication technologies–business processing outsourcing (ICT–BPO) industry has emerged as an important driver of the Mauritian economy and reached a GDP contribution of 7.4% in 2021. There are over 850 ICT–BPO companies in Mauritius employing around 30,000 people. Due to its sustained growth, the ICT sector has developed into a major pillar of the Mauritian economy and as an important engine of economic growth. Indeed, the ICT sector is contributing massively to Mauritius’s quest for economic diversification. In this chapter, a comprehensive evaluation of the Mauritian ICT sector is presented. The current status of the sector, key success factors for the sustained growth of the sector, and the challenges that the sector is facing are assessed and evaluated. A consultative approach was used to evaluate the Mauritian ICT sector. Insights from both the public and private sectors were collected and consultations with the major players of the ICT sector were carried out in the elaboration of this chapter. This chapter provides readers with a detailed account of the contributions of the ICT sector to the economic diversification of Mauritius.
