This entry will provide a survey of the major philosophical schools in ancient Greek and Roman ethics from the time of Plato (429–347bc) until the end of the Hellenistic period, when Cicero (106–43bc) wrote his dramatic summary of Epicurean, Stoic, and Peripatetic Ethics,De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum(“On Moral Ends,” 45bc). The entry pays special attention to the different accounts of virtue and happiness in ancient schools.
