O conto de fadas, tal como o conhecemos hoje em termos de estrutura e de elementos narratológicos, adquiriu forma literária definitiva em território francês entre os séculos XVII e XVIII. A crítica literária especializada (BACKSCHEIDER, 2013; HAASE, 2008; SCHACKER, 2015; SERMAIN, 2005; ZIPES, 2012) atribui a Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, a Condessa d’Aulnoy, tanto a cunhagem do termo “conto de fadas” (conte de fées) quanto a autoria do primeiro conto de fadas literário, “A Ilha da Felicidade” (L’Île de la Félicité), de 1690. O presente artigo tem por objetivo divulgar a vida e a obra literária de Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy, autora que permanece fora do cânone do gênero por ela inaugurado, bem como estabelecer uma proposta de recepção crítica atualizada.
