Abstract
Postprocessors like dvips translate each. dvi command into a PostScript equivalent. Might it not be possible to anticipate that activity and embed PostScript commands directly into a TEX document? After all, the special command is a mechanism that exists precisely for purposes like this. The advantage of placing direct PostScript commands into a source file is that a clever macro package can use the LATEX and TEX input language familiar to so many LATEX and TEX users-to generate useful graphic constructs in the PostScript language, which is familiar to relatively few users.
