Brentano, Franz

View through CrossRef
The German philosopher, Franz Brentano (1838–1917), devoted himself to philosophical, or natural, theology and theodicy throughout his scholarly career. Although he had been a Roman Catholic priest for nine years, he left the church in 1873 because he could not accept doctrines such as papal infallibility, the Trinity, transubstantiation, the incarnation, and original sin. Nevertheless, he argued forcefully against atheism, considering mysticism and religion to be surrogates for a rational theism.
