Le Discours historial de l'antique cité de Nîmes publié par Jean Poldo d'Albenas (Lyon, 1559/1560) est une réussite éditoriale exceptionnelle, due autant à la qualité du propos qu'à la modernité de l'illustration. La place accordée à l'architecture, à travers les nombreuses planches qui reproduisent le plan de la cité, le tracé de son enceinte, et surtout les antiquités les plus remarquables (« Maison carré », temple dit de Diane, amphithéâtre, pont du Gard) révèle une vision archéologique tout à fait neuve, sans équivalent en France à cette date. Elle atteste aussi la familiarité de Poldo avec les recueils de dessins italiens et plus largement sa connaissance approfondis de la théorie architecturale la plus récente. L'antiquaire renvoie à Vitruve mais encore à Alberti et à Philandrier dont les Annotationes sur le De Architectura venaient de paraître dans une version augmentée (Lyon, 1552). L'érudition du XVIIe siècle ne parvint pas à surpasser une publication qui avait su allier au texte humaniste une illustration irréprochable.
