A Study on Film Education in Art Education
View through CrossRef
This study examines the current state of film education in the field of art education by analyzing the content related to film across the national art curriculum, from the 7th curriculum revision to the most recent 2022 revision. It also investigates how film education is represented in elementary, middle, and high school art textbooks based on the 2015 and 2022 revised curricula. The curriculum analysis reveals that key elements of film education include film-based experiential learning, film production, film analysis, critical understanding of film, and the exploration of connections between art and film. Textbook analysis indicates that film education is addressed through film making activities, career education using film, media literacy focusing on film as a medium, integrated art-film approaches, and film appreciation. Findings suggest that current film education in art classes tends to prioritize film production, while film appreciation and critical viewing are relatively neglected. To enhance the quality and effectiveness of film education within art education, it is essential to strengthen teachers’ competencies in film making, develop instructional strategies aligned with the goals of art education, and improve the physical and technical infrastructure required for implementation. These efforts will help establish film as a substantial and integrated component of art education.
