In order to enable people’s struggles and intimate feelings to be alluded to, and stories that pervade danzón practitioners’ lives to be told that would otherwise be absent, short, experimentally written vignettes are interwoven between the more conventionally written chapters of the book: most are ethnographic fiction. Vignette 3 documents Renata’s relationship to danzón events, her fondness for the people she’s fought with over the years, and the painful absence of her ill lover, Óscar.
