The San Luis Uplift, Colorado and New Mexico--An Enigma of the Ancestral Rockies

View through CrossRef
The San Luis uplift of the Ancestral Rockies has long been considered to be the source for the relatively clean quartzose sandstones of Morrowan through early Desmoinesian age of north-central New Mexico and southwestern Colorado. Yet, the exact location and structural nature of this uplift remains an enigma. Lithologic differences and stratigraphic sequence suggest the San Luis uplift is a separate distinctive structural complex formed from an earlier wrench fault system located southwest of the true Uncompahgre uplift. The San Luis uplift predated the Uncompahgre uplift according to this evidence. Both the San Luis and Uncompahgre uplifts are source areas which are terminated southeastward in New Mexico by the Picuris-Pecos fault. Sediments from the San Luis uplift may provide a viable exploration target in the Paradox basin.
