AbstractIn addition to being the name of the Roman Senate house, a curia was also any inaugurated site (templum) where senators met, and outside Rome it suggests a civic assembly hall. Located on the north rim of theComitium, probably under the modern church of SS. Luca e Martina, the Curia Hostilia was the first Senate house in Rome; Caesar replaced it with the Curia Iulia on the site now occupied by a Diocletianic reconstruction. The wordcuriaseems to derive fromco‐viria, a meeting of men, whence the building where they convened.
