Pre-Columbian pendant in the shape of an eagle

View through Europeana Collections
This tumbago (gold-copper alloy) pendant is in the shape of a bird of prey with its prey in its beak (Compare Lothrop, 1950: fig.77 and 78). The object is a grave-gift. Presumably the object was ceremonially "killed," given the rust spots on the fracture surfaces, with the spirit of the object accompanying the deceased to the afterlife (Emmerich, 1965:109).‖ The dating is derived from Stone & Balser, 1958:13.‖ In America, there was a widespread belief in the afterlife. Gifts were given to the dead, often utensils such as earthenware pots, weapons, and food (corn, peanuts, beans, etc.).
