Badly damaged pre-Columbian copper pendant with human figure

View through Europeana Collections
Heavily damaged copper (or tumbago, copper-gold alloy) pendant with standing human figure. It wears belt and knee straps. The shape of the head cannot be determined, possibly it is a predator's head. Presumably the figure is so battered by a 'ritual death' it has undergone. In certain parts of Veraguas grave goods were ritually 'killed', destroyed, in order to liberate the spirit that then goes with the deceased to the afterlife (1965:109).‗In America there was a widespread belief in the afterlife. Gifts were given to the dead, often utensils such as earthenware pots, weapons, and food (corn, peanuts, beans, etc.).
