View through Europeana Collections
In the background, an architectural structure in the form of a temple with the representation of the meeting of the Turkish and Christian navies in the Gulf highlighting the capital ships of Venice, Spain and Rome, the signatories of the Holy League. In the center of the temple, there is Pope Pius V kneeling and flanked by his allies, the king of Spain and the Dux of Venice, giving thanks to Jesus Christ who blesses them from the top surrounded by the saints Peter and Paul on the pontifical shield, while four Angelotes carry the shields of John of Austria, Philip II, the Serenísima of Venice and Marco Antonio Colonna. Around the central floor appear the saints and protective gods of the victors. The whole temple rests on a large platform that four Turks support.
