Robert Duncan, “On Reading Marianne Moore”

View through CrossRef
This essay examines the relationship between Marianne Moore and Robert Duncan as documented in their surviving correspondence. It focuses on two biographical interactions and the influence the elder poet Moore played upon the younger poet Duncan: the first, her 1957 reading in San Francisco, and the second, her letter to Jack Spicer which yielded a poem from Duncan in response. Duncan’s first interaction with Moore came in 1957 when, as Assistant Director of the San Francisco State College Poetry Center (now San Francisco State University), he invited her to give a reading that he introduced. The other noteworthy exchange that Duncan had with Moore begins with a letter she had sent to Jack Spicer. By focusing on these archival exchanges, this essay considers Moore as one of Duncan’s modernist influences.
